What's the background of the Australian Labradoodle?

The  Labradoodle  began in the early 1970's when the Guide Dog Association of Australia began a breeding and research program to produce allergy friendly guide dogs.  Wally Cochran is the founder of the Labradoodle although credit is usually given to the Guide Dog Association.  The combination of the Labrador and Poodle produced allergy friendly puppies that were very smart and easy to train.  As a result of these qualities, the breed soon became desirable as a family pet.

Are Australian Labradoodles free of allergies?

While no dog is completely “hypo-allergenic,” some are more “allergy friendly”. People who suffer from allergies and asthma tend to be more tolerant of dogs who have coats that are more like human hair. The Labradoodle is one of those dogs, although even among Labradoodles there is quite a variation in coats. It is important to work with your breeder to determine the right coat for you.
